1988 Bronco II Fussy Starter
MY 1988 BRONCO II 2WD HAS JUST HAD A NEW REBUILT ENGINE AND TRANNY (AUTO) INSTALLED. I HAD A FEW PROBLEMS WITH DIRTY INJECTORS THAT I HAVE SOLVED, BUT HERE'S A REAL DOOZY: SOMETIMES, FOR NO REASON, WHEN YOU TURN THE KEY ALL THE LIGHTS COME ON AND I GET ONLY A "CLICK" WITH EACH TURN OF THE KEY...SEEMS LIKE IT'S COMING FROM THE AREA OF THE SOLENOID, SO I CHANGED THAT. THEN I THOUGHT, WELL I'VE TURNED IT OVER A BIT LATELY, SO LET'S CHANGE OUT THE STARTER...SAME "CLICK"...THEN, A FEW HOURS LATER, OR TOMORROW OR WHATEVER, THE THING CRANKS UP JUST LIKE NOTHING EVER HAPPENED. THAT'S THE PROBLEM, NO MECHANIC SEEMS TO BE ABLE TO REPRODUCE IT...DANG THING JUST DECIDES TO JUST "CLICK" AND SIT THERE. ANYBODY HAVE THIS HAPPEN? I KNOW THE WIRING IS JUST A HURRICANE UNDER THE HOOD, SO IF THERE'S ANY WAY YOU CAN HELP...PLEASE DO SO.
THANKS,

uh, thanks Beefys....I've been in a bad mood all day with this beast....but I just love her when she's running right...
My reply is, well, the charge is fine and all the lights come on and the windows power down quickly with the key in the "on" position...wouldn't that mean that the battery is up and tightly connected?

Not necessarily. It requires allot of amperage to crank these puppies up. Light only require about 15 amps and window motors I think have the same requirements. I would check all connections and make sure they are in good condition and clean.
Battery cables are inexpensive and so is a battery. A local auto-parts house can usually check the condition of your battery and will check it for free if they want your business. The rest is all easy and just requires a very thorough visual inspection. Everything must be clean and if you are using those replacement bolt on battery terminals trash the cables and get new ones. Also as a test, run a large wire from the frame to one of the bolts on your starter. This will let you know if your starter is grounding properly.
I too, love my B2. I have also proved several times it is far superior to many other 4X4's. I am the guy who gets called to pull 'em out. LOL

Ah, okay....wouldn't surprise me if there is something loose...it's a maze of wiring in there...I've had the battery checked, and it won't crank with a jump...so something must be loose...Mine's a 2wd eddie bauer and everytime I think I"m going to push it off a cliff, well, you know...I just love it...
