phone sync question

so I have my phone synced for calls and texts and such- and it works fine. the question is when I watch a video on my phone while synced in my truck the volume goes silent on the phone and it doesn't play thru the trucks speakers. I have to disconnect the phone from being synced and then the volume plays thru the phone. is this correct or am I missing something?
I wanted to listen to the video sort of like an audio book thru the truck

have you tried using a cord to connect? some apps refuse to play over bluetooth... I see a bunch of issues reported with youtube this way,
is android auto/carplay running? (you didn't mention what kind of phone)

Click on the audio button on lower left on screen. Select Sources, then select Bluetooth aka your phone. Assuming you have the Sync 3.

a phone can be “synced” - able to receive calls and text via Bluetooth but If The “source” button is on another setting like xm radio- fm /am then when you watch a video it will be silent. You have to change the source to Your Bluetooth then it should work. If it doesn’t then I’m not sure after that.

Other option is to open control center on your phone and change the audio output to "iPhone" from "sync". This is where you would choose to send audio to either your phone speakers, headphones, Bluetooth, etc. This will allow you to hear audio from your phone out of your phone speakers while still having am/fm/etc playing through the truck WITHOUT disconnecting Bluetooth.

You have to select USB connection under audio source.
