Looking for the truck I want, hoping to consult the gurus here to know if what I'm looking for is real.
I know that '86 was the last year for the "three on the tree" transmission. I don't want a 80 or 81 with the swiss cheese frame.
Ideally I want a extended cab, 4x4, three on the tree with the 4.9L I6. Does this combo exist? If not, how close can I get. I'm dead set on the 300, manual trans, 4x4, and I know I can get it. Extended cab would be nice but not needed.
Gurus away!
No F100 4WD's after 1976, no 1980/83 F100 Super Cabs, no F100's after 1983.
1984/86 F150 4WD Super Cab available with 300 I-6, 3 speed (both standard equipment), optional 4WD, RTS TS-OD 4 speed overdrive, New Process 435 or Warner T-18 4 speed.
Could have either an 8.8" or 9" rear axle. I'd avoid the 3 on the tree, because its shift collar is non existent.
I'm no fan of the TS-OD either, because it's a "weak sister" with a POS multi-piece shift lever that is notorious for breaking.

I know the 300 I-6 and 3 spd (three on the tree manual) were both standard equipment on 2wd trucks, but I've never seen a 3spd manual column shift on a 4x4 Bullnose truck.
If that combo exists, I've certainly never seen one. I believe that is what the PO was asking about, unless of course he was referring to a 3spd auto....some people DO call them three-on-the-tree (incorrectly imho).
I'd personally stay away from the 3-on-the-tree column shift as well. Shift collar is NLA, as is the shift tube and most (if not all) of the plastic wear parts, bushings, spring washer, etc. Some of the column's lower end parts are shared with the auto trans, and are available NOS, but they're not the pieces that are needed most of the time.
Not 4WD [sorry], but is extended cab, 6 cylinder and manual transmission and quite nice. For some reason, the appropriate link cannot be copied [?]. Worcester.craigslist.org
