As per our 2012 6.7 PSD manual, added 13 qts. of T6 full synthetic oil along with a new Motorcraft oil filter. Checked the dip stick "cable" and it looked low. I added another quart for a total of 14 qts. and now after letting it set for 24 hours, it looks like the level is correct. What gives with that?
13 quarts is the correct quantity for the 12-16 trucks for sure, and most likely correct for the 17+ as well. Not sure why you needed an additional quart. Is it possible the jugs you used was a bit short of the 4 quarts they are supposed to hold?
No, I purchased a 2.5 gallon jug and a 1 gallon jug. So it totaled 14 qts. I could be reading the dip stick incorrectly. It is hard to read. I probably should drain out one quart to be on the safe side.
What is the level on the dipstick now? It's specifically 13 qt. I have the twisted metal dipstick but the correct amount is typically half way in the hatched area on mine after running/soaking. That's prefilling the oil filter and the rest in the pan. With active regeneration fuel dilution from daily driving, it'll creep up and 14 qt is already overfull.
I figured that would be a longshot. I'm sure you didn't spill a quart either so it must be overfilled. Do you have the cable dipstick that requires a science degree to figure out? I do my own oil changes as well and have always put 13 quarts in, start engine, check for leaks and then check the dip stick. It always looks overfilled to me. During one oil change I purposely used 12 quarts and started the engine, checked for leaks and pulled the dipstick. The oil was right on the lowest add mark line.
Yes it is the cable type dip stick. A bear to read. I think I will just drain one quart and say its good. In the past I have always put in just 13 qts, but this time it did not look full. Possible my old eyes.
Park the truck on a level surface. Pull the dipstick and let the truck sit overnight. Check ONE TIME in the morning. Dragging oil up and down the dipstick tube is the problem with the cable type dipstick.
I removed one quart of oil last night, and will check the oil level later today. With the cable type dipstick, it is very difficult to read because of oil being brought up in the tube every time you check it. I will let it sit for another couple of hours and then check it.
I know for sure I added 14 quarts and not 13. After removing one quart, it should be exactly 13 quarts in it right now.
Another issue, is the oil pan plastic plug seems a little to loose for me. I will check for any drips later today. Maybe the rubber "o ring" needs to be replaced with a new rubber. It actually is not a o ring, but a spiraling rubber piece. Next oil change, and that rubber will be replaced.
You are not serious about draining 1 qt I hope, but it’s f it makes you feel better. As with any vehicle especially a diesel, fill the recommended amount or very close to and run for awhile or drive around a day. Then after sitting for awhile “hrs” then check. Much easier to read dark oil on dipstick. Plus I would not worry one bit about over filling 1qt.
