1951 M3 Wheels

Hi all! Sorry for yet another split rim related post but I'm bringing a 51 M3 back to life and evaluating my tire and wheel options. I'm looking for a very original look. I have the Firestone RH5 rims with innie nubs for hub caps on the rear. On the front are 3 piece, outer ring rims with clips for hub caps.

Are both designs totally evil killers of men?

I would go for 3 pc outer ring rims and 7.50-17s if it was an affordable, safe option.

Ideally, I would find a nice set of Budd 71410, 19.5 x 5.25 tubeless rims I could afford but I think they are rare as hen's teeth and gold plated.

Thanks very much for any input on this subject!

Steve

Welcome to the forum. Sounds like what you have now are the stock widow makers on the rear and Chevy/GMC 17” wheels up front. The three piece rim might be safer, or could be worse if the small third ring is rusted or otherwise weak and damaged. The GM guys try to get replacements for them too. That design is called a Firestone/Kelsey Hayes “AR”. These won’t fit your rear hub because they have a 4.625” center bore where stock Ford wheels have a 4.78” center bore. And your stock hub caps won’t fit the clips that have a 9.15” circle vs your stock wheels having an 8.844” circle.

Since your truck is a 1951 it could have the early 14” Lockheed rear brakes, or the later 12” Bendix brakes. One way to tell which you have is by the location of the parking brake handle. In the left footwell says 14” Lockheeds, or tall handle to the right of the shifter says 12” Bendix. A common fix for the later 51 and 52 F-3s is to swap the 17s for a set of 16” F-2 wheels. These clear 12”, but not the 14” drums. They handle stock hub caps.

You’ve done your home work and know the 19.5” Budd 71410 is a clean fix for either set of rear drums. Hub caps and all. But hard to find. The below CL ad might be a solution for you depending on what the seller can tell you. These are listed on the Appleton, WI, CL. Every year at the big Iola WI Swap Meet a local guy name Olson sets up and sells wheels. He occasionally has the 19.5s, and I’ve learned from him of a batch of 19.5s that were specially built for UPS or FedEx. They have no part numbers, and are 6” wide vs the Budds that are 5.25” wide. I don’t know if they handle stock hub caps. The set listed in the CL ad don’t appear to have hub cap clips as would the Chevy/GMC 19.5” variety made by K-H. But I can’t tell from the pictures whether there are mounting holes for the clips that I simply don’t see. The K-H variety would also have the smaller center bore that you’d need to avoid. The only markings on these UPS/FedEx wheels shows them having Firestone outer rims. If hub caps aren’t a great concern to you these may be an option. This seller might be the Olson fellow.

From here the other main option is to build custom wheels using stock widow maker centers. We can go deeper on that if you want to hear about it. Stu

Edit - I neglected to mention the 17.5” x 5.25” Budds. Either number 70720 or 73240. These clear the 14” hubs and drums, accept stock hub caps, and use 8-17.5” tires. These tires are shorter than your 7.50-17s. They are similar to the 7.50-16” at 32”, which would be right for the F-2 wheels. These were optional on F-250s beginning in 1956, same as the 19.5s. Thanks a lot Stu! If I had the cash I'd definitely go for that set on CL!

Turns out I have the 12" brakes so not so difficult to find something to at least get her rolling around. Maybe as the project progresses I'll be able to justify that expense for a real nice, original style look!

Thanks again!
