Hello. On my '96 XLT I have been receiving through my air bag idiot light the code "4-2." The dealership told me something might be wrong with the air bag system. I sighed and hung up. A body shop told me that the left side air bag sensor was bad and need replaced.
$80 and an air bag sensor later, I still have my code. So I hooked it up to the right side...still had the code.
SRS fuse is still good, pulled it, received code "1-2."
Anyone have any ideas on what is wrong and how to fix it?
It is possible that it could be the "clockspring" link it the steering wheel/column. The clockspring is the connection for the horn button, the cruise control buttons, and also, the air bag. The most common thing to show up when the clock spring is bad is the air bag light to start flashing. Other problems that can show up are the horn and cruise control not to function. Good luck.
If you're going to mess w/ the SRS (airbag) system, please do yourself a favor and buy a factory service manual. Read it and HEED THE SAFETY WARNINGS or you could end up severely injured.
Code 42 means that the LH Primary Crash Sensor Feed/Return Circuit is open. This could mean an open sensor or a bad connection or broken wire.
You've already replaced the sensor & you still have the problem, so you can probably rule it out as the cause. Most likely a corroded or loose connection or a pinched or broken wire somewhere in the sensor circuit.
You'll need a manual to trace the wires & teach you how to disarm the system without accidentally deploying the airbag.
