My wife recently notified me that our 1996 Aerostar is making a loud noise in the transmission when she backs up. I've recently listened to it myself and I think it has something to do with the all wheel drive mechanism. It sounds like perhaps a clutch slipping much like the clutches in a positraction differential. It does not sound good. Does anybody have some info on how this mechanism works and does this sound like something somebody is familiar with?
I've never heard of this kind of problem occuring when backing up so I'm not familiar with it.
The transfer case clutch solenoid is energized to apply the clutch when wheel slip is detected. You could unplug the module or the clutch solenoid and see if the problem goes away. That will at least give you a clue as to whether or not you're on the right track. If the clutch if being applied when it shouldn't, then you'll have to troubleshoot to figure out why (sensors, short, etc.).
Further information on the Aerostar transmission problem. After trying to drive from Fairbanks to Anchorage the transfer case destroyed itself. So.....the original "noise" was no doubt from the transfer case and not a problem with the All wheel drive engagement mechanism.
i have the program mitchell on demand, and i read in the TSB (technical safety bulletins) that transfer cases in some cases exploded, and would ruin tranmissions and engine in the process, did that happen to you?
No.......it did not ruin anything else. Fortunately, my wife stopped when it was beginning to make bad noises and asked a local mechanic to take a look. He told her it was a bad C/V joint. Luckily, my wife decided to call my brother in Anchorage and he drove up to her location with a trailer and hauled the damaged Aerostar to Anchorage............ Now I just have to figure out how I'm going to get a replacement transfer case.
