Help a noob
hey everyone,
im starting to get to know my “new” 77 XLT Ranger. While doing so I’m starting to try to get to the bottom of some of its issues.
Can anyone help help me identify what im looking at?
Middle top of photo. It looks like a leaky line? Or blockage? Is this coolant?
Im wondering if it’s contributing to some AC issues. Previous owner mentioned AC work greats. It also ran great when I first bought. While it still runs cold, it’s only coming off the dashboard vents, nothing from the front vents.
The fresh air vent that opens and closes below the dashboard on the passenger side, all of the sudden also stopped working.
Could all of this be related?

Probably not.
D4AZ-18495-A .. Vacuum Controlled Heater Water Valve - Use with factory installed integral A/C (Motorcraft YG-136) / Available from Ford
This valve is spliced into the inlet to heater core heater hose, so either the valve is leaking, or one or both of the hoses that clamp to the valve have sprung a leak.
This valve is also a well known notorious POS, it gets stuck in the open, closed or partially open positions.

Bolted to the backside of the A/C Heater control panel in the dash is this:
D5TZ-19B888-A .. A/C Vacuum Controlled Selector Valve Assy (Motorcraft YH-285) / Obsolete ~ Available NOS
All the vacuum hoses from the blend door motors and the heater water valve connect to this puppy. It also contains the "kicker switch" that turns on the A/C
When you slide the lever on the control panel, this valve opens one blend door, closes another.
The vacuum hoses can kink, the ends of these hoses where they fit onto the nipples of the blend door motors and water valve can crack, allowing air to escape.
The vacuum blend door motors could also be defective, there are several different types.
A/C vacuum valve shown as 19B888 in upper pic. Blend door motors shown as 18A318 in lower pic.
