400 Timing Pointer

Is there an easy way to set the timing on this engine? Who is the goon who came up with this set up? Looks like it is going to be a pain in the ***.

It's not bad at all, just scribe 0 and use an adjustable timing light. I normally aim from near the battery. Oh FYI that napa radiator hose should be changed as its bulging and soft. That thing is pre 1992 based on the paint stamp.

I will be going thru this rig, I just acquired from my father-in-law. He rarely drove it, it will be needing some TLC. 1980 F350 dually, Trailer Special.

I take white chalk or white out and highlight the timing marks before trying to time an engine. Clean the damper off then highlight them

Fortunately the damper is degreed for a good distance each side of zero.

I lie on the ground under the truck, set the pointer to 15 BTDC. Then get up and turn the distributor so the reluctor tooth is dead center in the pickup coil. Clamp'er down and start'er up.

I agree, there must have been a better place to put the pointer.

I got the timing set at 10 BTDC. Have driven it some, still have some fine tuning to do. Seems to be a vacuum leak somewhere, imagine that. I am thinking that I will start to eliminate some the excessive vacuum operated equipment
