gear oil

Hello,

I have an '04 exped 4WD eddie bauer with the 5.4L. It just hit 150000 mi, so I am doing some maintenance on it. I am going to change the fluid on the differentials and transfer case. I got some synthetic gear oil for the differentials and synthetic ATF for the transfer case, but looking in my Haynes manual, it says to add 4oz of "friction modifier" to the rear differential when changing the gear oil. Do I really need this? I got synthetic gear oil so I figure its fine, but I just want to be sure I don't damage the rear diff by not adding it. Any insight would be helpful.

You need it if it's a limited slip differential in the rear. The front is not limited slip.

ok, that makes sense- is it something i have to special order? Would Autozone have it?

Look on the bottle, most gear oils will already have the limited slip additive already in it. If not most parts stores sell it close to the gear oil.

I just looked on the Mobile 1 syn gear oil I got- its already in there.
