Can anyone give me some help with replacing my REAR U-Joint?
The truck is a 1994 F150 Flareside. I've got the drive shaft lowered at the rear and the 4 snap rings removed, but can't seem to get the U-joint removed. Any suggestions on how to do this would be very helpful, and the sooner the better. It's a beautiful sunny day, and I want to go muddin'.
get a vice , one socket larger than the end of u-joint and one smaller. put small one inside of area where ring was, one on opposite side over the u-joint and crank vice. this will push cup into larger socket. this should leave the cup from small socket side still in the driveshaft. if not you can pull it apart now. if it is , you may have to knock it back out the other side. it is easy to do. then repeat opposite cups.
The best way to remove the u-joints is to have the entire shaft out from under the truck. In the past I have un-bolted the u-joint flange from the diff. Then I have been able to slip the yolk on the other end of the shaft out of the trans, depending on how your transmission/transfer case is set up. Then, I would set the shaft in a vice. After the clips were removed, I would use the back end of a ballpeen hammer against the cap of the joint. As the back end of the hammer rested on the cap, I would hit the head of the hammer with another, heavier hammer. This has always worked for me. I am sure that there are u-joint pullers that you could rent, if needed. good luck. Jake.
thanks for the advice and hints/help. I took it and ran with it.
Just got done..... took it for a test drive and seems to work GREAT. Gonna cook some dinner now, then pack the truck and go muddin and camping tomorrow.....I got one of those "kitchen passes". lol
