We all know how easy it is to chip our trucks, since Ford already put the connection point on the board in the PCM, what was the original purpose of this? Was it not possible to update the pcm through the OBD11 port as with all modern stuff? Is it a leftover from before the introduction of the OBD11?
Just curious as to the history!
The program was loaded onto the chip after the circuit board was assembled and right before being installed in the truck for the simple fact the programming was always a work in progress. Back when these trucks were the current offerings if you took your truck in to the dealership for service you would have to request them not to install the lastest pcm update. It was standard operating procedure at the dealer to install the most current programming. Dealer did updates via OBD port but has the capability to do it out of the truck via the connector when installing a new pcm for example.
