I guess I got fairly lucky on my 78 Bronco with it not being as bad as the others on this thread. I just had this very repair done yesterday. I had removed my steering gear as I was replacing it and I noticed some cracks, maybe 5 in total. They were very light cracks right around the forward most bolt hole and were going in all directions starting at the hole and extending out an inch or two each. I'm not a welder, so I had a shop do it. They welded up the cracks and welded on a plate over the affected area similar to what Jetfixer-6 did to his. They charged me for a couple hours time and that was it. Cross my fingers it doesn't come back! It's been non-stop issues with this Bronco lately, Murphy's law in action.
I had taken a picture of my bent tie rod after I shot some paint where I wire wheeled the spot the steering gear sits. It was after I looked at the pic that I noticed the cracks. The paint and the way the light hits it really shows off the cracks compared to when it was bare metal. I had to go back and double check to make sure they were cracks and sure enough they were.
