In the days of - it got spark, got air, got gas, was in time - it ran, I did my own stuff. Still got tools but I'm 72 next month with a fake hip and knee and can't get on the floor anymore. Only had my truck a couple months. It's second Ford and the last one was a champ. This one I'm not completely trusting yet and don't have good feelings about the dealer. I've had to replace the 4 wheel drive engage solenoid already.
I'll be 65 in a couple months, although it's a little hard I still manage to crawl under the trucks. I will be doing that very soon when I change out one of my headers and making up a new section of exhaust pipe. On the new trucks and cars I'm at a loss and have to rely on the dealership engine related with all the electronics..
Are most of you guys turning your own wrenches? Use the dealership(s). Got a favorite mechanic?
I still do most of my own retro-fitting. For instance, whatever brainiac at Seekins ordered this truck, they didn't order it with the upfitters. So I ordered all the OEM parts and installed them myself, then installed some LED light bars. That said, I did just have a shop install another light bar for me because I don't currently have the time.
Also, I purchased the full service plan (with synthetic oil for the 6.2L) for my rig with the extended 8 year/125K mile warranty. Any basic issues and most normal service, I just let their QuickLane take care of it. They've been doing great work.
I bought mine used from Kendall Used Cars. Downloaded the manual. Lariat Sport Package. Still finding goodies I didn't know about. Haven't pulled my trailer yet. I've talked to folks with the V6 and only heard good things. I can't complain about the gas mileage. I do miss the Nav system I had on my Toyota 1794. That may be my first upgrade.
I do all my own if at all possible. I had a sensor go bad in the exhaust system of my 2012 with the 6.7l I had the shop work on that it was still under extended warranty. I have a couple different code readers now and will try my best to do what i can going forward.
I'm 60 and have one knee replaced and having the other replaced this coming January! I also injured my back about two and a half years ago, I didn't have to have an operation but i still have problems from time to time. I can still get up and down on a creeper, it's just that everything happens at a slower pace now.
