The other day while turning right it seemed as tho it was difficult to make the steering wheel turn. I thought to myself "thats odd". now it seems that I have no power assist when turning right? everything is fine when turning left. I have no weird noise like the power steering pump is out of fluid (I checked anyway, it is full)
don't know where to start. I haven't hit a curb or any ditches or pot holes. there is no visible damage. any ideas on where to start
First thing is a good inspection, turn while looking at everything and make sure there isn't some obvious binding. I'd lift the front end and check for looseness in the wheel bearings, make sure they're tight, and while you're at it lift up on the tire from the bottom with a pry bar and see if there is any movement in the upper and lower ball joints. If everything looks good then you probably have a problem with the steering gear box. Kind of a weird symptom...just have to look at everything. Interesting to see how it feels with the tires off the ground and the weight off of it.
Silly questions (on my part) just to make sure we're not missing anything:
1) Is this when you are turning right at any speed or only when going slow?
2) If it is only when you are going slow, are you on the brakes only when you turn right?
3) Are slow left turns on the brakes okay?
going to jack the truck up later today or tomorrow as I have to put a motor in a ranger today :-((. I have the issue at all speeds and wether braking or not only while turning right no issues while turning left

Good luck with the Ranger. I've had weeks like that with more jobs than I have time for too.
It's very unusual to have power steering issues in one direction only. Do you have a steering damper? Maybe it has valves stuck going in one direction.
