Hi Guys, my first post (although I have been lurking on this forum for a few years). I inherited my Dads 52 Mercury, it had been a restomod project for him and he paid lots of different guys to do work on it that unfortunately I am now finding out was done very poorly. This truck has huge sentimental value to me and I hope to get it to a safe, smooth running super awesome truck that I can enjoy driving and make my Dad proud of the work I hope to do on it.
One of the many challenges I have is identifying the mods that had been done, starting with the front end! Any ideas or thoughts? I found a stamp on the top of the A arm that says 8 275 if that is any help. Thank you in advance to anyone that has the time to look at the pictures(I have more but it seems I could only post 2 on here?). Cheers Shannon
Wow tough to tell from the pic but I'm sure some one will be along to help . Do you have any idea what year it may have been done as it will help narrow it down .
That is what is referred to as a "Volare" front end. The independent 90 degree torsion bars are the giveaway. This front end can originally be found in Plymouth Volares, Dodge Aspens, Dodge Diplomats, Chrysler 5th Avenues, and quite a few other 70's-80's vintage F, M, and J body Chrysler products. It was a popular swap into these trucks for many years before better options came along. It is a labor intensive swap that requires careful measurement, cutting, alignment and welding to safely and successfully complete. It's hard to comment on the overall quality of the installation in your truck from those pictures, but the welding at least looks competent.
Yep, definitely Chrysler T-bar. I put one of those in two different trucks, a 48 and a 49. Some say the ride is a bit mushy but I thought it was great since I was looking for a soft ride. Unless you absolutely hate it, I'd leave it as is. It's very dependable even if dated. The last 5th Avenue was made in 1989.
Thanks BlueOvalRage and GreatNorthWoods for the reply and your knowledge! Greatly appreciated! A soft ride sounds right up my alley! As for the quality I will continue to investigate that a bit further and I am guessing parts should be relatively easy to find. Thanks again guys, I appreciate your time.
