My engine makes a weird noise, and I suspect a dead cylinder. I'll find out when I do a compression test, but for the time being, if my issue were either a valve (or valves)/ piston rings, could I just replace the problematic parts, or should I do other things while the engine is apart? I should also add that this will be my first rebuild, so I'm sorry if the question sounds a bit weird/ dumb.

Low power (for a 460), shakes, has a mis when idling, not to mention the noise. Sounds like there’s no or low compression in one of the cylinders. My suspicions will be confirmed or denied when I actually find the time to do a compression check
Don't stop at compression if you find a bad cylinder. Leak down is more informative in isolating the cause of low compression.
As for a rebuild, find a good machine shop, and don't cut corners if you want it to last. Do lots of homework/research. It isn't exactly cheap, so make sure the truck is worth it to you. You can patch it back together but unless you're broke and just trying to squeeze a little more use out of the truck I wouldn't bother unless doing a full rebuild.
