Engine options for a '66 F100

Engine options for a '66 F100

I'm in the homework stage of figuring out what's the best engine replacement option for my '66 short bed. It currently has a tired 352/c6 and I'm looking at three different engine options and I figured I'd see what you guys think would be the best option. This truck is a cruiser and I'd like for it to perform better than average. I currently have a 1985 F250 2wd parts truck with a good HO 351w/c6 (crappy heads, flat tappet cam, low compression pistons) but it's a good running engine. The other option is An 84,000 mile 5.0 out of a 1994 mustang GT.(E7 heads, HO mustang roller cam, owner can install an Anderson N21 cam and 1.7 roller rockers). The last option being a 5.0 out of a 1996 ford explorer (f4te truck cam, GT40 heads). Whichever engine I go with, I'll be using a c4 transmission since it's lighter weight and has a lot less parasitic loss than a c6. What would be the best engine
For my set up?

The 351w is the better option, it'll need better heads and more compression but with that done it will give you the kind of power you want. A 5.0 can deliver the same HP but building it to do so makes it a 90lb weakling at typical cruising rpms. The specs for the Anderson N21 says.. " Recommend 3.73 to 4.30 gears. rpm range 2600-6200, needs 2800-3000 converter" and that's in a 3000lb car, the same motor in a 4000+ lb truck will require even more gear and a higher stall.

Thank you for the reply Conanski... I saw those cam spec's also and thought it was a little much for a 3,800lb truck. I can always do the link bar roller cam retrofit kit in this 351 that I mentioned and go with a similar grind cam to the RV version that this engine came with. I think going with a c4, the current 3.25 gearing, decent cam and heads and intake would really do wonders on that 351 even with the current pistons.

Yes.. stock heads on these 351s are really much too small for this displacement, the stock pistons have a considerable dish but the heads also have 69cc chambers so swap on something with 58-62cc chambers and static CR jumps to 9:1 or a little better(from 8.3). With a cam that has as little as 260 something total duration and .450-.500" lift you'll have 300hp or more and a really broad powerband.. no high stall necessary.

Sounds good to me.. what heads would you recommend? What are your opinions of the link bar rollers?

Heads with the smaller 1.94" intake valve will clear the pistons so Eddy Performers, Dart Iron eagles, any AFR or TFS. Linkbar roller lifters are good, they are a better option to get a roller cam in an older block than drilling the valley for a spider or using a small base circle cam.

Why not just rebuild the 352 and stroke it while you're at it ? You'll spend less money and end up with a 445 cube engine than you will doing an engine swap here. I've seen one guy who swapped out a 352 for a 302 and he ended up spending enough money to have bought a second truck in a 67 F100. Everything needs to be changed here. Motor mounts, frame stands for the mounts, transmission, linkages, exhaust, you name it it's gotta go to swap in a small block. You could even stroke it to a 390 if you don't want to go bigger. Just needs a .050 overbore and the crank, rods and pistons.

I think it just boils down to I'm not a big fan of FE engines.. it's definitely an option however.
