Intake manifold question 352 1966

I need to know about the sheet metal that's attached to the bottom of the intake manifold. If I remove it for cleaning can I put it back on . Tom

They are twist in nails. I've pulled them out before by using vis-grips locked on the head of the nail. I'm assuming you want to clean up the carbon. You can hammer them back in. I usually tap the holes and put small bolts back in. You might need to use a propane torch to heat it up just a little.

On the bottom of intake under carb, in the exhaust passage. When I took off sheet metal I knew something was wrong , it was loaded with carbon . Tom

Only this time plug that passage if it has one. Exhaust over time will give it the cancer.

I really don't want to go to a 4 barrel , I have another manifold but the motor been in the weather for quite a while but I got it off using the torch and it looks OK. I like to have the exhaust warm the air coming in in the colder months. It makes driveabilty much better when it's not cold stubborn . Problem with 4 barrel is cost to by manifold and carb #1 and if the gas in the back of the carb goes bad from not using the back barrels enough it causes more problems #2 . Thanks for the help .Tom

You can have that brazed up pretty easy if done properly. Blocking off the crossover isn't a good idea for the cold like you said.

edit: Regarding the secondaries, you shouldn't have that problem in a 4bbl. The engine idles off of the secondaries as well as the primaries and this keeps fresh fuel coming in.

That iron looks thin to me there in the crack. Brazing it will only last a short time if it is. On second thought, it is thin, that's why it cracked there. But grind it out and see like hetz said to be sure.

I'd grind it out to see since it will need done anyway and my magic x-ray vision isn't what it used to be.

If you have access to conventional gas where you're at, then either running it only or alternating between fillups with E10 will keep your carb happy. Been doin this for 14 years now with the three carbs on my 331. Keeps the ethanol ratio below 5%.

A guy I met a few years ago back had a cracked manifold like yours. He also wanted to keep the two barrel. He opted to buy an Edel 390 4 barrel manifold, installed a 1/2" thick adapter (4 to 2),and remounted his 2 barrel back on it. Said the thing ran like a scarred ape. He even used the stock carb linkage. Think he said something about needing to bend the linkage a bit.
Nice to get rid of that boat anker manifold.
Just a thought.
