Hi Performance Coils COP

Good day this is my first post I have a 2000 excursion with a 5.4 l I really like this truck I would like to get a little more power and I read the claims of 10-12 hp with hi po coils the say you can open the plug gap and improve the flame front that makes sense but have any of you done this with good results thanks this is a great forum

Welcome to the EX forum!

If you want your 5.4 to run its best, feed it a couple cans of Techron, install new plugs and boots, clean the MAF, new fuel and air filters and get it a few custom tunes from 5Star. Headers and exhaust will provide the same benifits as they typically do on most cars, the stock intakes is a cold air setup that can outflow the engine at redline. Verify the bigger throttle body opening is not larger than the mating port on the intake manifold, if it is it's a total waste.
I wouldn't expect any real performance improvement from any COP, unless it's replacing a bad one that's causing a miss.
Of course, if you really want to spend some money a nice blower or turbo setup should wake it up. Or trade up to a V-10!

Coils making more power ? Haha that’s funny, don’t be a sucker, that’s not how engines work.

A engine needs more fuel and air to make more power.

If you really want to party, swap over some SVT Lightning heads, intake manifold and Supercharger.

Agree with everyone else, coils for more power is a myth. In fact, Id recommend ONLY Motorcraft coils as a replacement along with Motorcraft plugs.

Headers with some high flow cats and a tune from 5-Star will go farther for more performance than coils will. Plus it will give you a chance to replace any broken exhaust manifold studs you may have.

Back when I first got into the Super Duty/Excursion world (and before I went back to school for automotive), I had a 99 Super Duty with the 5.4. I bought a set of the Accel COPs and... no change other than they didn't last very long. Tried the MSD COPs next and... no change other than they lasted longer than the Accels but still not very long. Went back to Motorcraft- still felt the same, but they were still on the truck 80k later when it went to the next owner.

We could have a big technical discussion as to why the "performance" coils didn't do squat for added performance, but I figure two real-world examples would be time better spent. FWIW, the best "performance" mod I did to that truck was cleaning the MAF and Y-pipe/new exhaust.
