Stop the Rain !

[FONT=arial][FONT=arial][FONT=arial] I got nto tareing the steering column down to tighten the tilt so it would pass inspection, now i destroyed the ignition key switch and cant get it any further apart. I left the windows down and it looks like rain soon. Please advise on what to try here.[FONT=arial][FONT=arial][FONT=arial]

UGH! I've been there. I did the same thing on a gmc once. Run a hot wire straight from the battery an jump it into the window switch to put your windows up, then either brave the rain and fight with it inside the truck, or do like I did and yand the whole column and screw with it inside. You'll still get aggrivated, but at least youll be dry.

Yes a new column would certainly be the easiest, and probably look better in the end because if you have a temper anything like mine, I'm sure that the current column has had the crap beaten out of it in frustration. I was able to dissect mine a little farther than what you show in the photo, but remember, that was also a gm column and I'm sure there are subtle differences. My suggestion in your case would be a new (used) piece. Thinking back on my experience, I think that the saved effort, and hours lost spent doing open column surgery were probably not worth the price of a fair donor replacement.

I think it can be done, but I don't think its worth the effort.
Shouldn't be more than say 100-150 .(and even that high should be very nice to look at, a scruffier on should be able to be had for even less.

Good luck! Ps what year truck is that? Can't tell from gauges.

1985 6.9 diesel duel rear wheels XL ext cab 8 ft bed. I think they said 4.11 gears at the back, w/ wrong size tires, thing revs away, smoking, new AC pump motor, head gaskets were replaced, new radiator, batteries, batt cables look over all poor but work, runs great, clean interior, nice black paint,no rust.
