Outer Tie Rods...

So I have some play in my steering 1"-2". Truck has 97k miles. Would it be ideal to replace just the outer tie rods first before tackling the inner tie rods then possibly the steering box? Do inner tie rods wear just as fast as outer tie rods? Truck is a 2wd.

Have you checked them for condition? I wouldn't just throw parts at it hoping it cured a problem.

I will this evening. I will use the pliers method by squeezing the tie rod. If it has play in it then it is bad. Saw this when doing research. Do you agree?

Just called into the Ford dealership where the truck was serviced all its life and back at 65k miles the inner tie rods and ball joints were replaced. Nothing stating the outer tie rods.

I don't know how you check a tie rod end and I would only be guessing.

just recently saw it on Youtube that if you see any movement when squeezing the rod end that it is bad. But at nearly 100k miles, play in steering wheel, Moog tie rods at ($45 out the door) is cheaper than taking a risk at damaging my steering box. Still not a bad idea to change them even if they are good. Though 100k miles on a heavy duty truck the odds are they are close to being bad if not bad already. Play in steering wheel is one side effect of bad tie rods.

Here is the video I saw

OK, I didn't know of that method, my guess would have been to have someone gently rock the steering wheel while looking for play in tie rod end. RFX is a go to for some on here (including me) and Michigan bearing is a good to deal with supplier. Right now I'm having trouble with their website but here it is.

Squeezing them will show minor wear that may not be evident when looking at them while someone rocks the steering wheel. When doing the steering wheel rock to check tie rod ends putting a hand on them will often reveal more than the eye can see.

If you do the WATCH WHILE SOMEONE MOVES THE WHEEL.. Just make sure you have someone you trust at the wheel.
