2.9L wont start

Hi,new guy here.

I have an 87 ranger with a 2.9l multi-port engine.
When I bought the truck it had no gas in the tank and wouldn't start, so I filled it up. Still wouldn't start. I poured a little gas in the intake and it fired for a second then died. I checked fuel presure and read 0 with the key on. I changed fuel presure regulator and when i removed the bolts gas sprayed out, like it had presure behind it. Checked fuel presure with new regulator and still at zero (guage is good). I cannot hear the fuel pump in tank running with key on. I checked the wires going into tank and had 12V at one of them(black with white stripe) but not sure if that is power to pump. I cannot figure out which relay on the fender is the one for the pump, and I cannot find a fuse for the pump as my chilton book says it has. I tried resseting the safety (inertia) switch but it didn't work. The inertia switch button feels a little loose, I can pull it up and down and the actual button doesn't feel like it is connected to anything inside the switch.
Any help?

My questions are,,,
How do I test the inertia switch
How do I locate the fuel pump relay
How can I tell if both low presure and high presure pumps are working.
How do I locate the fuel pump fuse
Should I be able to hear the in tank pump run with the key in run position.

Thanx for any help.

Found out today there is no power to the fuel pump in the tank. Where is the fuel pump fuse located? The fuel pump relay works, the fuel pump in tank works with 12V apllied and grounded. I checked voltage at both pumps and I get a zero reading with key on?

The fuel pump should be a fusable link for that year.

There are about 4 fusable links around the relays. Do you know which one it is or what color wire its on?

To test your inertia switch, take a 3/4" wrench and smack the body panel that it is mounted to. It should po. Then you can reset it. You can also check it for continuity.

Cool, I found the fuse and it reads good.
If I run 12V to each fuel pump through a toggle switch and an in-line fuse. Then ground each pumps negative wire to the frame.
Would this hurt anything? I'm running out of ideas and getting frustrated!
Today I bypassed the inertia switch, made sure the computer was grounded replaced all relays, Checked all wire for continuity?
I think I'm just gonna run 12V through a toggle because I can Run both pumps off the battery with jumper wires and both the pumps work?
I'm kinda thinking also that the circuit in the computer that grounds the pump is bad?
Bought to fix this thing with a big sledge hammer!!!!!!!!

It's easy enough to check the computer. I believe you should have 4 wires on your pump relay. Do you have power on 2 of them? A third wire should should go from there to the pump, possibly thru the inertia switch. the forth wire is the ground turned on by the comp. Take a test light and check to see that power comes out of the third wire when the key is turned on. ( should be powered for 1 to 2 sec's.,
If no power there, check the forth wire to see if the comp is grounding it for 1 to 2 sec's.
If this checks out, follow it back by going to the inertia to the pump.

I just hate to see things "rigged" up to make them work.

Hey thanx for the info. I will check the relay wires in the morning and check the computer ground circuit.

I don't think it will matter to much if the wirring is rigged because this truck is going to be SERIOUSLY rigged in a few weeks.

If you bypass the inertia switch and you have an accident the fuel pumps will not shut off which could cause a BAD fire.

Well the truck is a trail rig and never used on the road. In about a month the truck is getting a carb'd small block so everything will be deleted. Will the inertia switch work with the truck on its side? Or does it only work on impacts?

If you can put a truck on its side without an impact, tnen your not going fast enough.

Can't go very fast with 5.38 gears anyways! Some of the trails I run will put you on your side several times without to much impact. The truck needs to stay running during these places though.

Can't believe you haven't tripped one yet. We like to play games in the shop to see if people are on their toes. If you take a 3/4 wrench and smack the inner kick panel on a windstar it will trip. Doesn't take a lot of effort. I guess it's all in the direction.

Nope, never tripped one yet. This is the first ranger I've ever owned.
