I recently acuired a 1979 F-100. The engine is not original. The block is stamped with C8OE-6O15-A, the heads are stamped with 7M28 2V, the intake is stamped 7M27 with another string stamped on it C8EA-9425-B A. I asked the guy who i bought it from and he said the original owener put a 302 out of a 68 fairlane. I wanted to be sure what engine i have, is it a 302 or 289. Can any one out there help out a first time builder. would really appreciate it.
Can you access the crank part number? You could measure the stroke easier said than done, it would be 1/8" longer for the 302. I came up with the block number you gave meant it was a 302 block from cleveland, however, in 1967 this block was used for 289's and in 1968 it was used for 302's. Under the block part number you gave us there should be a 4 character code The first number is the year your block was used, if the first number on the 4 character date code under the block part number is 7 then it was used in 67 and is a 289 if it is and 8 then it was used in 68 and was a 302. Lemme know what you find out as I am qurious, because after looking at your intake code I am thinking you have a 289 but to be sure get the code off the block under the casting/part number you provided

Also why Mil1ion said who cares weather it is a 289 or 302 is because because if you are in doubt you can measure the crank and if it is a 289 just replace with 302 internals as they interchange. Good luck
well after rolling around in the grease somemore. whooyaa. I found 7M23 right above the block code. that sucker was small, almost didn't see it.
1967 dec 23rd so by what you said its a 289?
Does appear that way, Mil1ion nailed the 67 on the intake so it appears to have followed suit on the block so according to the info I found you have a 302 block that was used as a 289 from the factory. As mentioned no biggie good luck
go to this site and go half the way down where it says "in short:" it explains that it your listed block was used in 67 then it was a 289 it it was used in 68 then it was a 302. You may wanna measure or have measured the crank or get the number off of it. There is a chance the person who did the swap knew this and went ahead and put 302 internals in it a slight chance but anything is possible. Hope this helps
see and you say who cares if its a 302 or 289. Now look at all the good fun you can have hunting for information to find out which. lol. Thanks taylor, the information has given me a little better idea what i'm working with. when i get a chance I will do the messuring and see whats in the guts of her. I was curious the 302s had a slightly longer cylinders to compensate for the 302s longer stroke?
No, identical blocks the cylinders are the same. I did a little looking around and it seems the rods compensated for the 302's longer stroke. The 289 used 5.15" rods and the 302 used 5.09" so the longer 289 rods took up the slack of the 1/8" shorter stroke of the 289 crank, they used the same pistons. Later
