For an 2004 F-150 5.4 L , how can you identify if it's a 16 valve or 24 valve engine. Been told it's the 3 valve engines that have the spark plugs problems.
My memory is a little fuzzy, but I recall that 2003, 5.4 and later modular engines had the 2-piece plug design.
The earlier modular engines, 5.4, had just 3.5 threads that held the spark plug in the head. They were prone to blowing the plug out. My ex had a 2000 expy that I had to be careful installing and carefully torque down the plug.
One indicator is The vct sticking out of the valve cover . Pull one easy plug carefully , after soaking with carb cleaner and wiggling 1/8 of a turn and waiting a few hours .
