my ranger is 2.3 has a lot of miles but still runs good it just idles bad though. it goes fast then slow and so on. with any gas at all it runs smoother.i have read alot of u have problems with the iac. i cleaned it and the maf. still rough idle. then i read in my clymer to have the engine idling and unplug it and the engine speed should decrease or even stall out. mine stays exactly the same when i unplug it. have i found my problm? i know its only 50 buck to replace it but im 16 and low on cash and i hate to replace something that is not going to fix the problem. thanks
If you don't want to buy a new one, you can try cleaning the IAC by taking it off and spraying the inside with throttle body or carb cleaner to get the carbon and gunk out of it.
Ive had the high idle problem for a while on my '88 Ranger 4x2 2.9L engine. Cleaned the IAC a couple of times..along with the MAF. When replacing the IAC, be sure to REALLY tighten it down. That helped..but didnt cure the problem. Found out I had a minor air leak in the Upper Intake/plenum gasket. Replaced that..and now my idle is fine. Just my $.02 worth
