Steering pump ?

gentlemen,

been hearing a whining noise that seems to come from the power steering pump. I removed the belt and spined the pulley and it has some wobble to it. I don't think it's supposed to do that. Can someone point me to a how to replace the power steering pump on our trucks. Thanks

Thanks Gentlemen,

I just wanted confirm my diagnosis. Is a loose or wobble steering pump pulley a sign of a bad pump?
Not sure if this was the cause of the sporadic whining noise I was hearing while driving. It did sound as if the belt was slipping and that's why I removed the belt and checked all the pulleys.

Is the reservoir full? Oil pumps squeal when they are starving for oil, I don't know why but they do and it is a unique squeal, not like a belt squeal.

With the truck running do you see cavitation in the fluid?

The pulley is pressed on, there should be no play. If you see cavitation idling then have someone turn the wheel does the cavitation continue or stop?

Ok went to Oryleys and picked up a new pump. Once I pressed on the pulley I noticed that I can it in and out about a 1/16th. The pulley is on tight on the stem or bolt so it's the stem that moves in and out about a 1/16th. Is that normal? The Guys at Oryleys are saying its normal.

The shaft on the pump will move a bit NOT the pulley on the stem. Make sense?

Don’t forget to bleed the system before driving.

Been getting home after dark so no time during the week to install the pump. The pump is ready to reinstall. It came with 1 white plastic washer and one small oring. I know where the white plastic washer goes but not certain about the oring. Does it go in the pump where the fitting screws in? Just want to make sure Seem like the only logical spot.

Thanks

IIRC, there’s an oring on the high pressure side. I bled the system when I replaced the pump and put synthetic fluid in the system.
