Can crusher

Hey, I like to recycle what I can and aluminum cans pile up. The wife drinks a lot of sodas. Oh and my friends and I drink a "few" brews while bench racing. Anywho I have a "Can Ram" that works pretty good at crushing the cans but....

I'm thinkin of building a more bueno version out of metal that would squash the cans even further. Has anyone seen any plans for such a critter before I reinvent the wheel? I guess I could just duplicate the original in metal with a smaller "quench" area.

i made a perty cool one.

the one i made is made of all aluminum stock and runs off of 110 volt electricity and my compressor. the base is made out of 1/4" aluminum. i used a bimba air cylinder and some mac solenoid switches to controll it electrically with a push button, but a simple open close valve will work also.

then after the can is smashed, i added a smaller air cylinder on it to shoot it out of the way so all i have to do is load it and push the button. it smashes them down to 1/2" - 3/4"

i can draw up the plans for it for you but it will take some time.

A guy made one in our metal shop last year. It was a big air rammer- it had a 1.500" ram inside a 1.502" cylendar. 185 psi, an WHAMM!!!!! Crushes a can to about .025". It's impressive.

Wow Robb and Nate, post some pics or sketches. I'd like to make one for me. I usually buy bottle beer but don't get a stinking thing back from the recyler so recently I've been buying can beers. Doesn't taste as good as bottle beer but I pour it in a chilled mug and it makes everything alright.

I LOVE it!!

Who else but a bunch of car guys would build 185-psi, 220-volt, power ejection, high speed can crushers!

You guys have been watching Tim on "Home Improvement" too long.

The way I look at it, in the time you spent building those super crushers, I coulda drank 18 more beers!

Be safe.

High Powered can crushers, you guys are cool. Move over Tim the toolman. I want one. I would have to increase the consumption of a beverage just to see the can crusher go.

Oh, another simpler way we did it. The biggest BFH (Big "Fun" Hammer). Imagine a 6" diameter, 12" long steel head on a 3/8" sidewall tube handle. Wheighs in at about 50-60 lbs. Record can was .052". It's primary use is smashing crummy aluminum castings for remelting. No swing involved, just lift and drop!

After 18 beers I bet you can't lift THAT thing any more. What's that thing way?

I like the kinetic energy idea Nate.

The smaller you can squash them the less space they take up.

A Tim the Toolman special?:

Take a small block engine (any make) remove the heads; fab an individual cylinder "cap" that works off of an index head - that is animated via a PLC that is prompted by the crankshaft. Then setup a syntron feeder system to feed the cans into the cylinders. Using a photo-eye, the "Cap" will close and turn a motor that drives the engine. For a parts hopper you can use a 55 gallon drum.

Would this be too expensive?

How about a 1' foot square box with a square ram? Fill it up and then hit the hydralic pump. Something like a garbage compactor. You would have a solid piece and not even have to bag it!

Heres an idea.
Picture a 1' long pipe about 3" dia. or big enough to fit the can in, then cut it open on the top where you can lay the can sideways in to it. then cut a slot just big enough for the smashed can to fall out of into the bucket the smasher is mounted above.
Run it all off an air cylinder, with a 4-way valve.
I like it, very effecient, very fast. Oh yea.

Hmm, there's an idea. Does anyone have a sparce Ch**y block? I wouldn't want to ruin a good ford block. Also, I think that I have a PLC around here somewhere. That would be one heck of a machine
