Does anyone else think this is a good idea?

Did he drill through the ebrake support bracket?

Looks like he made some alterations to the inspection hole with a dremel or drill or something. Minus using his trick, which I wouldn't personally do, you must remove the axle. It was also like that on my 79 F250.

I'd remove the axle. You're going to be beating on that thing to get it out and back in, getting back in you're going to be around the spring trying to get at it to hit it. You will need an axle socket to get the nut off but they're available at the parts stores and might even be able to borrow it from Poop Boys, Advance Auto, etc. There is an O ring on the axle, not a gasket and you may or may not be able to reuse it. If you get it from Ford it's about $15, I got it from a bearing distributor near me for about $1.00.

The bad bolt is already out and I thought you were supposed to use another bolt to seat the new stud...so no beating required? Would it cause damage to the E-Brake to put a hole in it??? What are those holes for anyway??? Thanks for the help.

I’d take the axle off myself and have a shop press them in. NAPA out here has a machine shop in the back, if you buy the parts from them it’s free to press them in. If 1 is bad, I’d replace them all but that’s me.

Take the hub off, it'll save you time and money in the long run and you'll be able to inspect your bearings while it is out. Putting a hole in the backing plates will open up an area for moisture to get in and rust those plates out. Just went through replacing a set at work, not the most fun job.

Pull the axle shaft, remove hub nut, pull hub, put nuts on end of studs surrounding bad one, drive old one out, flip hub over, drive new one in, remove wheel seal, inspect & prelube bearings, put inner bearing in, drive new wheel seal in, install hub on axle, install outer bearing, install nut and torque to 60 ft-lbs, back off 5 clicks for new bearings, 7 clicks for old bearings, reinstall axle shaft.

I'd format that better but I'm on my phone currently.
