I have a 1996 Explorer XLT with a V6 engine. Last spring I noticed that the anti lock brakes were coming on on the front wheels when I stopped, even when the road wasn't slippery and the tire wasn't losing traction at all. My mechanic looked at it and said the left front sensor was not working below 5 mph and advised me to replace the sensors. They were only sold in pairs so I replaced both front brake sensors. Everything worked fine.
Now just 6 months later the same thing is happening again. Sometimes when I stop, even on dry pavement the front anti-lock starts working and the car takes longer to stop. I get no indicator lights or any other problems.
I had the same exact problem with my 96 Explorer.... I had the sensors replaced, then 6 mos. later it started up again.... I had them replaced a second time (they were covered since I had them done at the Ford Service) and it has been almost a year now and they are fine. Maybe it was a bad batch of ABS Sensors?? Good Luck to you
I had the sensors replaced again. It was 10 months after the first repalcement. Ford covered the sensors under warranty, so I suspect they had some bad sensors. I had to pay for the labor as it was not a Ford garage that did the work. However, the new sensors still itermittantly give a false signal and the anti-lock triggers, even whent he wheel is not slipping. This happens at speeds below 5 mph and seems to occur most often on smoother roads. Ford supposedly said just drive the vehicle more to keep the gear that the sensors read cleaner.
