I spent 8 years in Anchorage as a mechanic ( 4 of those years right across the street from chilcoot's) I found the Volvo drivers to hold the highest number of strange yuppy and greenie types. Second was BMW. And the most filthy rich of them all drove modest older cars.
The only good thing about Anchorage is that it was a short drive to Alaska, which is rather unfortunate for you if you live too close.

The Subaru Loyales have a major problem: RUST. Quarters, rockers, front fenders, & (scariest of all) the unit body bvraces under the front floorpans (which are major structural parts). Also, service access can be a bit tough.

I'd keep the caprice--your MPG is probably due to a bad O2 sensor.

For a power & MPG boost, get an exhaust system for a 1994 Caprice wagon.

Both cars have lived in the south, which is not prone to rust. As far as I can tell, none have rust. But I know what you mean, I've seen many 80's Subarus which were rust buckets.

Also, I have replaced O2 recently. I think the comment about the cat. converter is right on the money. That big station wagon is full of options.
