I've been stalking a friend's 2000 Ex for quite some time. He's offered it to me a couple times over the last couple years but I wasn't comfortable with the price. He has now offered it to me for a very reasonable price. Its white, V10, 4x4 with leather. I've owned a 2003 F250 crew cab 4x4 with a V10 for 10 years. I'm very familiar in and out with the super duty trucks. I know all about and repaired the woes of the V10. I love the V10 engine. It has been great for what I use it for. What things do I need to look out for on these? Where does all the rust hide? Thanks!
I live in a rust free zone so I’ll leave that mess to the experts.
The main excursion specific issue that is not common to the F-trucks, front spring sag.
measure from the center of the hub to the bottom of the fender lip.
stock was, front 23 and 24” rear.
with more then a 1/2” of sag you lose enough caster that wander becomes a issue, new springs and Ann alignment with 5* of caster Are the solution.
Look at the rockers and inner rockers for rust and up into the rear dogleg at the rocker/rear wheelwell junction, that's where the rust typically gets going first. Bottom of the doors too.
Thanks for the replies! I checked it out today and drove it for about an hour. Drives and handles beautifully. Rust is very very minimal for a Northern vehicle. I was really surprised by how little rust there is underneath. Rockers are nearly perfect with the exception of a few scuffs and worn paint. Only rust underneath is typical running board mount corrosion which is easily remedied. There are a few interior blemishes. A few scuffs on the leather seats. A gouge on the passenger side dashboard. Busted tip on shifter handle. Power door locks not working properly. And overall could use a good detail. But I feel like I'm knit-picking. This rig is in great shape. No dents or scratches. Newer rubber, ball joints less than a year old, manifold studs and gaskets just replaced a week ago, new plugs, boots, and a couple coils a month ago. Asking price is $1500 under KBB. The only hangup I have about buying immediately is I dont need it. I can find plenty of use for it but really don't need it. I want it... but don't need it. And the funny thing is I'm the only one trying to talk myself out of buying it.
