Does anyone have any experience with long-term storage? Most of the storage units by me are looking for upwards of $100 for vehicle storage which seems like a lot...
I won't be able to access the truck for over a year, so I wouldn't mind it being less accessible.
Your query is very location-specific. What may be commonplace for PA would be unusual for other locales. As a rule I have found that garages that are not being used by the homeowner are put up for rent at a fairly reasonable monthly rate. Commercial units are usually higher in cost but offer somewhat better security. I found a defunct chicken ranch that the owner was using for rental spaces...price is right but the drive is fairly long. Like you, I didn't need convenience for access so it works for me.
Around Lock Haven in central PA you can get storage for $30 to $40 a month. Drive it up here! And if you are not back in the spring I'll get it out for you and drive it.
I'll assume you want covered, lockable storage.
in Portland Maine, a motor club with secure, full service heated storage is $3,000 per year.
On the other extreme is outdoor, uncovered, unsecure for $49 a month nearby
In the middle is a range of $125 to $229 per month for a 10'x20' indoor unheated locked storage bay, price depending on proximity to the city.

Here is another option if you have physical space but no covered facility. Buy an enclosed 20' car hauler. Park your vehicle inside it. Put jack stands under the trailer to support it. Remove the trailer wheels and tires and store them inside the trailer. Wire the trailer to an external 110V source if you want a trickle charger or inside trailer lights. I have used my Hallmark trailer as an extra garage for the last 12 years. Don't forget to fog the engine, drain and blow out the fuel tank, etc before an extended storage.
The more I read about commercial locations, I think the minimum I'll be able to get away with is $150 if I drive into NJ.
More likely I'll be in the $200 range.
Your numbers were dead-on Tom.
I looked at private garages on Craigslist.
Definitely more reasonable in price, but perhaps less so in terms of peace of mind.
Thanks Charlie.
You got a point Abe.
Maybe it's worth making the trek out to central PA.
I'll need to crunch the numbers on cost of getting out there versus saving money on the monthly.
Brian and Joe, I like the idea of a trailer or a temp garage, but I suspect the wife would squash that idea quick.
