For all these reasons, the truck you described is better suited to an around town, light use purposes. LWB, 351 or larger, F250 would be my choice for towing.
Thank you for your reply.

I understand your point regarding the long wheel base. It would be better for towing. I will be towing a trailer less than 5,000 Lbs fully loaded. I think that the F250 may be overkill for my needs. However, the 351 may be well worth consideration. I appreciate your insight and will keep your recommendations in mind.

The ratings are lower for manual trans because of the clutch. People do not know how to start and stop with a heavy load and a clutch - and FoMoCo did not want to be responsible for replacing clutches on trucks when people maxed out the load capacity and then burned up the clutch in stop and go traffic or the like.

I have read on this site that you can tow as much with a manual as you can an automatic. OD has nothing to do with it.

Good luck on the search, I love my F150 about as much as I can like a 6 cylinder fullsize pickup - which I guess is a lot!

If your not real experienced with carburetors then stay with efi. Much more efficient and now with todays tech fairly easy to work on.

well, this may be comparing apples to oranges (or something) but in Jan, 2014, I bought a 1988 F250 with a 302 and manual and 153,000 showing. I hauled a 1800 lb popup pickup camper for 50,000 miles with NO PROBLEMS. This replaced a 1982 F250 with 4.9l I6 carrying the same camper with no problems. Now, in Jan, 2018, I replaced the camper on the 1988 with a 2200lb full size camper. It does OK. I live in the mountains and there are a lot of grades wherever I go. Yeah I can tell I'm right at my GVWR. I'm slow. OH well, get over it, go around me.
At the current time I have 214,000 on it and still carrying the camper. Gas mileage isn't great, but it's not my greatest worry. I still go over 250 miles on a fill up on both tanks, maybe 25-30 gal.
It's showing 31 and 43 codes. and I haven't resolved them, but that's it.
Life is good.
