spare tire mounting

I needed to use my spare this weekend. I had the tire fixed and in the process of replacing the spare. I see that it is mounted on the truck with the back of the wheel facing down so you can't check the spare for air. Has anyone put it in the other way? The holes in the rim will let out any trapped water. I do not drive on salty roads. It looks like it wouldn't care only that the spring device holder may stick down a bit more....Any thoughts... thanks

After trying to put it in which I'm sure is possible but hard for a person to do alone because of how the wheel is offset and the center has a lip which fit the wheel better upside down. I just put it in the way it came out. I did line up the stem under the car where I think a double ended filler could slip through a hole in the rim and not hit a bed brace...

After my daughter bought her 2018 truck, the first thing I did was to make her and I had to literally force her to break out the owner's guide and prove to me that she could figure out how to drop the spare, uncouple it and then re-couple and hoist it back into position properly.

She was about to make a 2000 mile trip back to El Paso, Tx and I needed to know that she could help herself if the occasion arose. The kid done good.

If you flip the spare over you take a chance on kicking something up and ripping off the valve stem. Especially if you are an avid off roader.

I had my 2016 crew cab.....I took my tire down after one year of owning the truck just to see the operation and figured I would lube up the cable.....I was shocked by how much gravel and thick dirt was trapped on the wheel ( spare tire)...... I took it off and cleaned it really good.....then got under the truck and physically washed it......a lot of trapped dirt for a truck that doesn't go off road.......the tire now rides in the bed...luckily I don't need to use the bed a lot..... so just a suggestion....check it every now and then....

When my dad bought his '76 F-150, it had a spare tire mount in the bed that stood vertical between the wheel well and the cab. It literally took no usable bed space and made life much easier. And I thought it looked pretty cool too.

That's back when trucks were pure utility vehicles. Now they have become cowboy Cadillacs.

I used to drop the spare and air it up when rotating tires - now I do a full rotation without dropping it to save time.
Mine is probably low on air. I carry a 12v compressor and gauge in truck toolbox at all times, can air up if I need it.
