I'm trying to find out if the 73 to 79 trucks used the same frame and had the same bodies and dimensions and sizes.See 78 and 79 trucks have different grills than the 73-77 obviously.I'm looking for a 73-79 truck to buy but I want to run a 360 or 390 V8 with a NP435 4spd. but I know the 77-79 trucks didn't use the 360 or 390 since they had the 351M and 400M.My question is can I buy motor mounts and transmission mounts for the older trucks that would work in the 77-79 trucks.
I found a 78 F-100 in my local newspaper for sale but didn't know if the 77-79 trucks were the same as the 73-76.Only thing I can tell from the two is that the grilles are different but I'm not sure.
2wd frames are the same 73-79. 4wd there were some changes but they don't affect engine mounts. You can bolt any 73-79 engine/trans into any 73-79 chassis.
The mounting pillars will vary between certain engine families. Otherwise, virtually everything else is cosmetic. The 390 uses a different pillar than the 400 series. Last year of production for 390 was 76, as you know. My 78 came original with a 302, the 400 set down on the same pillars, as best I reccolect 12 years later. I have swaped a 390 into a 77 and it did not fit until I got the right pillars.
That is correct... I put a 390 into a 77 that had a 400 with a NP (?) 4spd. Needed new bell housing,
and engine pillars, rest was a snap. The 390 had a duraspark II dist in 75 and 76. I found this also and reused the factory ignition. Do not know what else is involved if you are going from and auto to manual box.
