1994 F700 vin and axle decode
Hi All, I purchased another F700 a few months ago and im pondering what it would take to do a 4x4 conversion and something that would make it much simpler is if I find a matching axle for the front. Gear ratio and air brakes. The axle tag on my truck is not readable so im hoping that the axle code will be good enough. Otherwise I will have to thind the ratio the old fashioned way. Thank you everyone for your help!

1FD = FoMoCo USA - Ford Truck - Incomplete Vehicle.
M = Class 5 Hydraulic Brakes, 16,001-19,500 lbs. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating.
F70 = F700 (gas).
J = 7.0L (429) MFI (Multiport Fuel Injection).
1 = Check digit, FoMoCo use only.
R = 1994.
V = Kentucky Truck Assembly Plant.
A20604 = 1994 Numerical Sequence of Assembly, the trucks specific serial number.
WA = Rockwell model RS-17-220 Two Speed Rear Axle / 6.50/9.07 / 17,500 lbs. Rear Axle Capacity.

If it was W = Class 6 AIR brakes, 19,501-26,000 lbs. GVWR
Look on the sticker for the TYPE/GVW code, post what it is.

I apologize, I just looked at the vin again and it is indeed a W and not an M. Sorry for the misinformation. the Trans code is CV is there any info that can be had on that? Thank you

Okay thank you very much for all of that information. Do you have any opinions on making one of these trucks 4 wheel drive? A guy locally has a front axle off of an 89 f800 with air brakes and the transfer case for 1500$. Since the f700s and f800s are real similar to my knowledge should it be as easy as swapping axles, installing the transfer case and linkages, and modifying the driveshafts? Assuming axle ratios match of course.

1971 and later F600's were available with factory installed 4WD. I'm not familiar with F700/800's so equipped, so they may be Marmon-Herrington 4WD conversions.
Parts for 500 and larger series trucks are mostly obsolete, are getting very hard to find NOS .. No one repro's parts for them unless they are the same as F100/350.
Some parts can be found at NAPA and parts stores that specialize in BIG trucks.
