I have a 63 Unibody that now has a 1976 Chrysler/Nissan SD33 deisel engine installed. I think it came from an International Scout. Top speed is about 65 mph and that is at high rpm. The tranny has a super low granny gear that is isles. Any ideas on how to increase the speed by tranny swap or ?.
thanx
I'm guessing you have a T19 tranny since that's what the SD33 was mated to in in the Scout. Since the T19 is synchronized in all 4 years you could try changing the rear axle ratio a little. I wouldn't change it too much or the SD33 might not keep the truck moving in 4th at freeway speeds and it's a long step back down to 3rd...especially for the relatively narrow power band of a diesel.
BTW, granny gear is terrific for starting out with a heavy trailer or crawling through a field with a load of firewood. Normally don't use it when running empty.
65Ford,
thanx for the input. I’ll check into the possibilities. Your right about granny being a great gear but I don’t do any of those fun things anymore. Just drivin the truck is my fun now. Thanx again
