i have a 1985 6.9l idi 4x4 XLT Lariat Extended Cab LB i was wondering if group 31 batteries would fit in my truck without having to do modifications also any idea on what size battery cables i should use i live in Montana i saw -25 F last winter also any starter recommendations I'm sick of Autozone starters thank you for the help
Iam using group 65 in my 85 6.9. Bought them at Costco I think it was. This winter will be 4 years I have used this set.
I looked up the difference in size between a group 31 and 65. Pretty close.
Group 31
13" Long
6 13/18" Wide
9 716" High
Group 65
12 1/6" Long
7 1/2" Wide
7 9/16" High
When I bought the truck 4 years ago, the cable end on the drivers side was really badly corroded clear back under the insulation,
as well as the Pass side. Cut pass side off and crimped on a copper ring terminal end. And also the piece that goes down to the starter.
I replaced the cable between the batteries that runs along the Radiator with one from PNP out of a BMW. There is a model that has the
battery in the trunk, and the cable runs up the pass side to the engine compartment. About 12ft long, and the same size Ford uses.
PNP charges $5 for their cables no matter what the length....OR did.
I used the BMW batter clamp on the drivers side and crimped a ring terminal on the pass side. used one with the stud.
I also up graded the wire to a larger size to the Starter Relay and GP Relay.
For the Starter Iam using the Power Master 9050. You will get other opinions as to the best one when others come on line.
I bought mine here.
Thank you very much for the help 810 CCA Does not start my truck I Know this because I just tried 28 F degrees this morning any recommendations on cable size also if I took a photo of the cables would that help anything as far as knowing if they need replacement
Here's a highly rated supplier for battery cables. I haven't replaced mine yet. Cutting my own battery cables is on my TO DO list. I'll get there eventually, at least I don't have to start my truck at -20*F.
Thank you for the information I'll have to order some cables when I can yeah -20 kinda bites door freezes shut ignition switch is like an ice block lol I live off grid so if I wanna run the block heater by 8am I have to be up at 6am starting a generator lol
I have used custom battery cables to make replacement cables. They do a good job and are quick They have pre-made sets for various Ford trucks in several gauges of wire. They will do custom orders also. https://www.custombatterycables.com/
I ordered some custom cables for an upgrade to power the emergency pump on my bucket truck. They worked out really well.
Though the truck fires right up, I plan on ordering the Battery Cable Kit for F250/F350 - 1990-1997 -- 3/0 Cold weather / hard start option as the existing cables could use a change out.
Expensive but after about an hour of research this battery appears to be the cats meow.
Someone please talk me out a buying 2 haha.
Dieselholic my 86' fits group 31s easily but don't know if anything is missing from original battery tray parts.

This web site is messing with me... I post the page, but it jumps ahead a page when I click on it.
Go back a page then click forward and the page with the battery tray comes up.
