I just got an 87 bronco that I bought running after sitting for a couple of years, and the power steering makes a realy load rubbing noise when I turn the steering weel, even just a little bit.
I was wanting to know if this is a common problem and could be something simple or is the pump or possably the gear box having problems.
You have checked to make sure the power steering fluid is clean and full ? If the system is low it will make noises as you are having. If everything is full it could be the pump going bad.
Thanks, I have a feeling it is the pump because the belt is tight and the fluid is at the proper level, and the sound is coming from the belt and pump area.
I assume it has the Ford pump and not the Saginaw pump. (Saginaw looks like a canned ham). If the Ford pump will not shut up after a fluid replacement, try Lucas Power steering additive. Several people here, including myself, have had good luck with it. Worst case scenario, you are looking at a new pump. The Ford units are notoriously noisy especially if they have ever been run with the fluid level a bit low. (Aluminum impeller and aluminum pump housing results in immediate damage if the pump cavitates even for a few minutes. One of the drawbacks to the Ford PS pump).
I know that this is an old post but replacing the PS pump if needed is a fairly easy procedure. I bought the pump and both the high pressure and the return lines for like 50 dollars from autozone. As mine had been leaking an incredible 1 quart or so per week, it created quite a mess. Make sure you buy or rent the PS pulley tool when you do the job. I was careful, took my time and cleaned everything and the job took about 3 hours.
