What are you guys with the older Aerostars doing for a battery. It's supposed to use a group 64 and nothing else seems to fit like it's supposed to, mainly because the height doesn't match the hold down rods. I've been told by two places that sell only batteries that it isn't made anymore.
The only solution I see is to get a battery box from a later model and try to find a battery that will fit that box with the terminal posts ending up on the correct side.
Has anyone ever done this? Is it pretty much a bolt on project?
Over here in Florida there is an Interstate store where you take your old battery and they sell you a remaned one for $50.00. I've had good luck with those remaned, they last a lot longer than a new one.
Not sure where you are, but a casual search turned up the Pep Boys in Ft. Lauderdale has at least 1. It's a Champion, pretty good brand and at $25 discount right now.
The later model Aerostars used group 65 batteries, which are shorter but wider and deeper.
I've had mixed results using remanufactured batteries, so it's kind of a crap shoot. Just make sure to keep your receipt for warranty replacement.
I don't have any problem getting one for my 97 either, but it takes a group 65. My 87 takes a group 64. I can't use the 65 because the posts are reversed and the cables won't reach. I'll be passing an Interstate dealer later this week and I'll stop in, but their web site pops up a group 56 for my 87 and I want more amps than a 56 provides.
Quick search for group 64, napa, autozone, advance and walmart all have them. Should not be hard to get.
Don't believe everything you read on a website. They all have them until you walk into the store and try to buy it. Then they say the replacement for that is a 56. Autozone, Advance and Walmart do not have this battery. I will check NAPA tomorrow, but I won't get my hopes up.
I just came from the NAPA store and they can order it, if I want one that's been sitting on the shelf for three years. I'm just going to change the battery box because I will have the same problem every time I need a new battery.
I had this same problem with an ‘87 Aero of mine. Don’t remember the specific battery (group) I used but remember slightly readjusting the cables to make a regular terminal work. As best I can remember this didn’t require a lot of work and was rather easy.
I think there is also a version of the model 65 battery with the terminals reversed. Maybe it's model 66. Best to go to your local auto parts store to check.
Before heading to LKQ this morning, I decided to just see if the 27F battery would fit in the 87's tray. It's a real tight fit and that is one heavy battery. I had to wiggle the battery to get the hold down rods hooked to the battery tray and scrape what was left of the plastic coating from the inside of the piece that goes across the top of the battery but I managed to get it secured and hooked up.
