What to look for when buying?

I have started a search for a 2003-2007 explorer for my nephew. I know nothing about the 4.0 V6 but there seems to be plenty of 4.6 V8"s (had one in a F150) in the metro Atlanta area. Is the V6 a good engine? Are the transmissions the same in V6 & V8 and any issues to look for? Any of the years I'm looking at any better than the rest?
Thanks,
Scott

As with any older vehicle, buy it at a price that will allow you to replace 1 or 2 major components in the first year and not feel bad.

At this point, it's all dependent on how well the vehicle was cared for, the history of repairs, and how it was driven. 4.0 SOHC motors, 5 speed auto transmissions, and the rear axles all had issues in some of these. I would not buy a 4.0 SOHC in anything. The V8 may have had some issues, or may in it's old age, but the power is better and the fuel economy is probably the same. And whoever designed the cam drives in the V8 wasn't in a hurry to get out of town or drinking.

The later the better, service records are a plus, how it drives, how it shifts and how it sounds when you fire it up.

IIRC, one year of the Gen III Explorers (02-03-04) needed a tranny additive that wasn't in the factory fluid; the dealer should be able to tell what service bulletin this was and a VIN check will show whether it was added. I also would recommend sticking with the 4.6 engine.

It totally depends on how well it was maintained. We have a 2009 Lincoln 4.6 with 580,000 miles. It looks new, rides like a dream

If you buy a government use vehicle, you will find they have trashed it accordingly. says a lot about those who work for the government.

We found a 2003 4.0 1 owner with 109k miles. It was obvious it was cared for and maintenance performed. After driving around to look at other peoples polished junk this one was a buy. Thanks for the replies!

Late to this thread but,
Pay close attention to the belt drive for all the accessories. I've got an 03 exp xlt 4.0 and that I've had to replace the tensioner, idler pulley and belt every couple years. Motorcraft does not necessarily make the best replacement components, but they will be the most expensive.
