Driveline Ping

Hello all.

I have a 2001 CCLB F350 4x4 with 186,000mi. Since I have had the truck it has had a strange PING in the drive line going from P to R or D and vise versa. The truck has a brand new DieselSite Legendary 4r100 and did the same thing before the transmission was replaced. At first I thought it was the axle shafts pinging in the hubs, it wasnt. Pulled the rear driveshafts and all the ujoints are good. Checked the pinion on the rear axle, all seems good. Pillow block for the driveshaft is in good shape also. Rear output of the transfer case is nice and tight. Next I put it all together and after it was bolted to the transfer case output flange I welded the two together on opposing sides just to rule out a clocking flange. The truck still does it. It will only do it in one direction once say N-D (ping) D-N and then N-D again (no ping). D-R (ping), etc etc. As I said the ujoints all seemed good, no binding like a bad roller bearing or dried out. The slip joint looked good too, still has the blue plastic on it. Truck has a slight vibration at 70-75mph but nothing extreme. Any ideas? My guess would be a ujoint but none of them raised any red flags.

Thanks.

My guess is pinion flange.

Did you grease the slip joint really good?

Did I read that correctly ? You welded your driveshaft to the output flange ?

I later realized I should expand on my statement. I'm thinking it might be just a little bit loose and twisting on the splines, when it slips it'll be like a little hammer tap on the shaft.

Yes, only on two edges. This was to eliminate the possibility that it was jumping in the flange causing the ping, real easy to knock the welds off the flanges.
