Jolly Roger Joe thanks for the info on the T5. Have you got any of the numbers from yours? I'd like to know at least year and what it came from if possible so I can use yours as a base for what fits and doesn't. It looks to me from my research that some have the shifter further forward or back.

I believe the rear shifted T5 can be modified to a mid-shift location. S10 trucks seem to have a different tailshaft housing. There is even some people that make a replacement tailshaft housing that changes the shifter location. Just throwing out one option I've heard of. Never changed the location myself.

Interesting way of doing it here.

That really makes it appealing... knowing it's been done and seeing it gives me a few ideas of my own.

Personally I recommend the nv4500 the shifter will be in the same area or close to the og stick unlike a t5 from what I've seen. And its non integral bellhousing makes adapting it MUCH easier. Ive seen it done to a f600 wirh a 292 y block. I dont like everything done there but I like over all how he did it. Its whats replacing the t98 4 speed in my 64 f100 with a y block. plus you have granny gear.
just my 2 cents

OP has a 289...…. If he isn't a mad man, he can drive a T5 for decades. If he is, he can find one on every block.

Serving suggestion......

The Ranger M5OD-R1 is not as heavy duty as the F150 M5OD-R2. Not that either is super heavy duty, but they are different.

Fair enough I forgot about the dash. There is usually an asterisk in my life.

I figured the f150 M5OD would have to be stronger than the T5 from a Mustang when it came to working use. I may be wrong though. Being my project is a salvage yard/ craigslist type project, I would have surely used a T5 if I could had found one. I'm sure it would do fine for my type of use. I want to use the truck as a truck, but for the most part it will be driving me to work, and running the roads on the weekend. I want it to be capable of towing or hauling when needed. The M5OD fits good but I will say the integral bell housing makes it a little difficult with the frame cross member right under the bell location. I want to be able to run 80 on the highway or back up a trailer. This trans I have should be fine for it. Good enough for a 2001 F150 qith a 4.6, it is surely a good upgrade for the 65 with a small block Ford!!

Not sure if it's the standard or the PO did it when removing the original I6, but I just realized over the weekend that my trans x-member is bolted in. I guess that will make it much easier if I have to move it for whatever trans I choose in the end.

I just got my M5R2 bolted to the engine. The back cross member that supports the trans was bolted, but the front cross member under the bellhousing was riveted in. I had to drill out the rivets and remove it to get the trans in. But it fits!

my 65 has a cross member under the bell housing, it goes between the track arm brackets on the frame. Mine is riveted in also, and then a transmission support at the rear. Not really sure that trans support qualifies as a cross member but I'll call it that.

Another note about the rear cross member: I've seen some people mention just having to move it back and others saying they had to make a new one because the transmission would sit too high. I found out yesterday that using the mount for a 90s F150 makes it sit too high. But the original style mount for the 3.03 also bolts up to the M5R2, and just requires moving the cross member back.

My 65 original rear trans cross member is too high for the 5 speed. I don't have another style to try. I plan to make my own with a piece of 3" C channel.

Are you using the old style trans mount or the newer one? It worked out just fine in my 66 with the old style mount.
