how often are you guys changing your trans. fluid, I know I'm stuck in old timer mode and the days of every 30K are gone but 150K sounds like a lot? for those changing their own how are you refilling these retarded no dip stick/filler tube units. is the gasket one of the steel reusable types? Thanks Jim
I guess I should have asked how many quarts to do the usual drain, filter, fill change? the manual shows 13 but that's probably from dry. thanks again, Jim
I don't know if it was done before I bought it but I did it at 100K. If I had bought it new I would've changed it at 50-60K. But I tend to over do it when it comes to maintaining my vehicles.
it took about 7qts when I dropped the pan on mine. Was a bit of a PITA trying to get the level right with the shorty dipstick and hot cats, but its possible.
Agreed - wish these trucks had a pan drain plug and a user-friendly dipstick instead of the mini one next to the cat. I bought some heat resistant gloves off amazon for around 10 bucks to help with level checks.
Look at the bright side, at least you have a dipstick to work with at all. It seems to be becoming more common for manufacturers to eliminate the dipstick altogether, relying on a second plug or a standpipe to turn determine fluid level at a specific temperature.
Just about all of us would agree that 150,000 miles is a bit much, but it doesn't seem like any of us are transmission engineers either. I think 75,000 miles is a good point for service. I would love to see an oil analysis, but it doesn't seem common for people to have their transmission fluid analyzed.
You don't want to wait past 60k to service the 6R80 transmission. The electrical solenoids are highly prone to being ruined with debris. There is some good YouTube videos on this by ford service techs. Also it is well know to be an issue in BMW HP26 units which is the same basic transmission from ZF.
Well ford390gashog I think you just bumped up the schedule. I have only had this thing the last 6k miles, it doesn't appear that it was beat on but who knows. The dealer wants $200 to do a flush which doesn't sound to bad but they are quite content to leave the old filter in place. I think I would be happier with a new filter and change 1/2 the fluid. It would be nice if Mark would weigh in on flush against old way filter and refill, as Tom said I'm definitely not an engineer, of any sort. Jim
You can't door a flush on these, the built in thermostat won't allow it. I suggest dropping the pan adding a drain plug and cleaning out the debris. The filter can be replaced but is not needed.

They should be able to with with a heated flush machine. Most dealers don’t seem to have them, though. I’d prefer this over a drain and fill if the dealer is so equipped.
