I just found this site today. I have an '83 F150 4x4 step-side that looks mint and runs pretty good. It has the 4.9 six and 4-speed trans. My only source of info (so far) is a rather-vague Haynes manual. My question is about engine swaps. Can I "bolt-in" a 302 V8 and still keep the same tranny, transfer case, and axles? I don't want the expense of changing the entire drivetrain. I don't really know what kind of tranny or transfer it has...the data plate shows transmission code A (?). The Haynes book doesn't do a good job of telling me what I have, only that it could be one out of a couple of different transmissions and transfer cases. All it does say is that the front axle is a Dana 44IFS.
Any ideas, experience, advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
yes the rest of the drivetrain is ok if you have a manual linkage truck then you will have to get the new ball stuf for the 302 engine. and you will need to unbolt the part of the motor mount that is attatched to the frame, oil filter needs to go in one of them there holes, and you will need to get the motor mount stands for an 80's ford truck with a 302 or 351, I think 460 stands might work too butt good luck finding them. and I believe you will need a new radiator. and the changes to your exhaust that any exhaust shop should be able to do. I think that's it someone else can possibly correct me or add on. good luck with it.
Stang_boy, thanks for the info. Couple of things in your reply that I didn't understand...
1.) what do you mean by a "manual linkage truck"? Do you mean the clutch? The stock '83 tranny in there now is the one with the mechanical (non-hydraulic clutch). I also have a hydraulic clutch setup on the '84 tranny in my junker truck. Should I use that one instead of the '83?
2.) "..you will have to get the new ball stuf for the 302 engine" I don't know what this means at all. What is the ball stuf for a 302 engine?
sorry yes I did mean the manual linkage clutch. and by the ball stuff I mean the ball that the clutch linkage crossover arm fits to on the side of the engine I believe it comes off of the motor mount but I'm not sure. In my opinion I'd go with the hydraulic linkage I like the feal of it better when I'm driving and then you have less sollid stuff to get in the way of other things on the side of your engine compartment
Just go to a yard and get the motor mount supports. they will have to cut the rivets on the driver side. You may have rivets in your blank spots to grind off but then bolt on the supports and you are in buisness. I think you are making a good choice.
Good Luck!!
