when and what to do

My 1955 Ford f100 I switched over to 12 volt system. I need to replace the fuel float in the gas tank. I assume its a 6 volt float along with my stock fuel gauge. Do I need to upgrade the fuel float to 12 volt system? And what can I do with the 6 volt gauge? Any easy solutions? Also the reason I am replacing the float is because its rusted or can I clean it with vinegar?

I don't believe you need a 12v sending unit for the tank. I did this conversion on my Volvo and used the stock sending unit but had a voltage converter for the gauges. Most of the Ford suppliers have something that works for the gauges to convert from 6V to 12V. However, if you are swapping out the sending unit and are definitely going with a 12V conversion, might as well install a 12V unit and be done with it.

I would not try to salvage an old rusty sending unit. The contacts wear down and/or simply fail after a while, so why not just put a new one in if you're going to remove it for cleaning anyway?

I converted my truck from 6v to 12v this summer. All I had to do was put a voltage reducer on the back of the gauges and all the gauges worked properly. The fuel guage seems accurate, at least it hasn't left me on the side of the road.

so i should order a 12 volt fuel sender for my new tank? amd run a runtz to the stock gauge?
