I assume you are talking about volts not amps? The only thing I know of that would make the alternator put out too many volts is the voltage regulator. Has anyone checked that? What did you use to measure the volts and where did you measure it at?
Correct me if I'm wrong, somebody, but I believe the alternator should put out no more than 14.5 volts when the battery is low and it is charging. If the battery is fully charged it should be less, maybe 13 or 13.5.

well, like i said, when they rebuilt the alternator they put in a new voltage regulater so i'm totally lost by all this first, because i'm not an electrician and would prefer someone else mess with the electrical system and secondly because I thought we've done everything that needed to be done. I'll probably take the truck down to the alternator shop that did the alternator in the first place first thing on monday morning. . . something just isn't right.
Bubba Shrimp's numbers are right. If 15 and 16 volts are truly what it is putting out then you might soon have a toasted truck. Be sure to get it checked ASAP!

Alright, had it checked, turns out it was only the headlamp switch, burnt up pretty bad though. Got that taken care of and i had the alternator shop who rebuilt the alternator check it out while it's in the truck to see if my gauge is correct and it's not. Truck is really only putting out between 13.5 and 14 according to their computer but my gauge is reading between 15 and 17. I'm just glad is a screwed up gauge and not a screwed up electrical system issue.

Glad you got it fixed. I guess it could be worse - the meter saying 14 when it really was 17.
