Power Steering pump help quick!

94 F-350

I'm deep in this change and ran into one of many problems. I got a little baggie with a rubber o-ring and a teflon seal in it. It says on some instructions "A new teflon seal for the pressure hose is included with this replacemennt power steering unit. To assist installation soften seal in warm water expand over a tapered punch then transfer to hose fitting." My question is why is there an o-ring, where does it go and which side does the teflon seal go on? I have this thing torn down now and want to get back to somewhat looking like a truck soon. Please answer quick. Thanks.

From: Long Beach, Ms.
I just went through this same problem when putting a new rack and pinon set in the wifes Taurus. The Teflon seal goes on the end of the pressure hose where it enters the rack.
The o-ring is for the return hose.
I found that using a plastic funnel worked great to expand the Teflon seal. The taper was just right to open the seal enough.

I just went thru this w/taurus too. What a pain it has become.

To answer your your question though, the reason for the different seals is that there are several different types of hoses. Are we working with a pump here or a gearbox? Did you happen to notice what was on the lines before? In those instructions, there should be something that shows 3 types of lines and should show what seal goes on what type line.

The directions didn't say anything about three different lines so I went for it. The new line had a teflon seal on it already so I put it in, torqued in on and it's not leaking. I was going to replace the return line but got one from NAPA that didn't have any kind of fitting on the end. I just left the old one on. No leaks yet. I didn't put a filter in the return line either due to not being able tap into anywhere and having to get it done quick.
