Hey all, just got back from the exhaust shop getting estimates for some work. I am putting on the Borla headers and Y pipe designed for the '00 so I need a custom go between since the '00 Y is shorter than the '99 Y. They told me $60 for a stainless piece with the 3" collector flanges. I also am getting a new muffler and had asked his opinion on a Flowmaster 40 or 50. He reccomended a Magnaflow straight design over the Flowmasters on the V10. Supposedly the Magnaflow tunes down the high fequency rasp that the 10 puts out. Anyone run the Magnaflow and do you think it is true? They carry both and his price for the FL50 is just a tad less than the Magnaflow, not enough of a difference to lead me to believe he is upselling.
So, anyone with a Magnaflow??
If I don't hear any bad things I will go with it, he quoted me $300 total for the new stainless piece, new stainless pipe from the cat to the muffler, muffler, and a bling bling chrome tip. Should be in Monday afternoon barring any unforseen probs with the header install, can't wait!
I run two magnaflows in a different setup than what you have, but i love mine. Dont know what 2 flowmasters sound like, but from what i have been reading , magnaflows are more free flowing. You have my vote for magnaflows.

Please get us a sound byte asap ! I've heard the Flowmasters and I'd like to hear the Magnaflows. I posted here recently on a V-10 that drove by my campsite a while back. I could not find out what the person had for mufflers, but it was the most awesome sounding V-10 I have ever heard. So if possible post your sound file for us, thanks so much.
I can't speak on the Magnaflows, but I had Flowmasters on my V-10 and never liked the sound of it. Sounded much better on my V-8. I'd recommend AGAINST Flowmaster. I've heard lots of good things about Magnaflow though.
Ok, got the headers in this weekend, what a royal PITA! First bolt on the cat flange I touch strips, rusted on. Sawzall fixed that pretty easy. On to the manifolds. Passenger side is easy to get out with the fender liner out, driver is just tight where the studs are under the manifold. Everything went ok except for 3 snapped studs, all on the front ports. Both snapped on the drivers and one on the passenger. This part really sucked as there is no room to attempt an extraction, I will have to pull the heads if they leak too bad. So after all that, a few bloody knuckles and choice words they all fit in, nice and tight. Used JB Weld to try to seal the front area, so far so good, no leaks and it is real tight in there. I followed Stan's (Eurekaboy) install, without that it would have taken much longer. Oh, Borla never did address the NPT pipe plug for the EGR not being compatible with the Ford fitting. I was not able to custom make an adaptor like Stan, but will be this week. Used a temp patch to fit the EGR tube for the time being.
To whoever thinks the V10 sounds like two V6's, NO WAY!!
I wish I could drive it with the open headers, man this thing had a DEEP rumble at idle and just pure power sound coming at throttle. Suprised me at how deep the tone really was, it did scream like an indy car when it hit 3000+ rpm. It was vibrating all the mirrors and scaring pedestrians! What a rush, I still have the smile on my face from this mornings drive to the exhaust shop.
I could feel a loss of low end umph, power band did kick up with the headers wide open, I'll have to compare after the muffler and cat are attached.
So, now it gets the Magnaflow as I type this, I'll update what it sounds like, hopefully I can figure out how to post a clip.
Now that it is done and I have driven it a tad the answer is
DONT DO IT!!
My truck now sounds like a freakin VW bus, totally disgusting. Makes me sick to end up with this after all the $$ and work to get the headers and custom exhaust pieces on. I can't believe how much the cat and this lame Magnaflow killed the awesome sound that was coming from the straight headers. I wish I could just cut it off and put on a Flowmaster but I have to live with it till I can justify throwing away a $125 muffler.
Absolutley zero sound at idle, can't tell the engine is running. IMO the stock exhaust sounded tougher than this set up.

This really sucks.
Put the Magnaflow on E-Bay and buy a Flowmaster there ? Maybe the overall expense won't be so bad then ? Just a thought.

I'm really sorry you don't like it. It does suck to spend big bucks on something only to find you don't like it. I go through it all the time with computer upgrades that turn out to be incompatible with something else I'm using.
I have often thought that the stock exhaust could use a change. But after hearing all this about strange noises afterwards, I doubt I'll touch it - not to mention it's a 4-year lease (unlimited mileage).
I've said it before, the valve timing and the fact that it's a V10 (with 5 cylinders exhausting in one revolution, compared to 4 in a V8), make that weird sound. Less of a lag between cylinders. Not so much of a "whump-whump-whump", but a "waa-waa-waa-waa-waa"
You might be right-on when you say it sounds like a VW bus. Those VW 4-bangers had some really weird valve timing to get the low end. I think you're seeing the result of Ford engineering... However, without the weird noise, you wouldn't have that amazing torque ...
My stock exhaust sounds like a diesel exhaust. I'm not sure how much of that is the muffler and how much is the valve timing...
In my opinion it is the single exhaust.I could never achieve the sound i have now with single exhaust. My magnaflows have a deep sound at low rpms so i dont believe its the muffler.Higher rpms it has a raspy sound-lower-but still raspy. Its just the character of our engine, even firing order.I want headers next to see if it will rid me of exhaust pulsing sound @ 2000 rpms,NOT FLUTTER!
I love the 40 series Flowmaster on my V-10. Everyone loves the sound of it. They also know its me coming! I have the Single in Dual out version/split rear type.
